Migrating SP list from one site to another in SP2010

Lately I've been assigned to create a new team SharePoint. This is a totally new exercise for me and I need to do a lot of research in the net.

Today I would liek to share with you all on how to migrate a customed list from a site to another new site in SharePoint 2010.

Migrating SP list from one site to another
Method 1: Export in excel file
  1. Export the list you want to migrate in excel file.
  2. Save the file in your local drive
  3. Open the save file, create a table for the list and save change.
  4. Go the new site, click on site actions>more options>create list> import spreadsheet
  5. Click create.
  6. Key in your list name, description and browse the excel file you want to import.
Pro:
  • You are able to delete unwanted columns
  • As long as you have the designer access right
Con:
  • File maybe big and time consuming
  • More steps
  • You will have to reconfigure the column settings
Method 2: Import as List Template .stp
  1. Choose the list you want to migrate.
  2. Go list setting> Save as template. Remember to check "include content"
  3. Now this .stp file is available in List Template Gallery (parent site)
  4. Save the template in your local drive.
  5. Go to your new parent site.
  6. Site actions> Site Settings> Galleries> List Templates
  7. Import the . stp file you have just save in your local drive.
  8. Now this template is available for all your sites(parent and sub-sites)
  9. Go to the site you want to import the list.
  10. Site actions> More options> Create list
  11. Choose the template you havs just save in the list templates. Click create
  12. Viola. Now you have your list ready for action.
  13. You will loose all the lookup features and need to link that back as you import the rest of the related list.
Pro:
  • Straight forward and quickest way
  • Retain most of the lsit column's features
Con:
  • You must be the site admin in order to perform the import
Happy trying!
